About Laser Cataract Surgery
Our San Antonio, TX eye surgeons, Dr. Allison Young and Dr. Jana Waters, are highly trained and experienced in performing laser-assisted cataract surgery to restore clear vision. Laser cataract surgery utilizes femtosecond light technology to create the necessary incision in the cornea and break up the cataract. Once the cataract is removed, a cataract surgery can also become a refractive surgery with the use of specially designed intraocular lenses (IOLs). These artificial lenses can replace the natural lens that is removed in order to correct refractive errors, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and age-related vision loss. Best Candidates
Patients are typically over the age of 40, in good general health, are free of eye infections, and have a cataract that are starting to affect your everyday activities like driving day or night, reading or even watching TV. Patients with astigmatism may also qualify for laser cataract surgery. Astigmatism affects your near and distance vision and can cause blurriness or double vision. If astigmatism is not treated during cataract surgery, you will need to wear glasses or contacts after the procedure. Our surgeons will perform a comprehensive eye exam to determine whether laser-assisted cataract surgery is right for you, as well as which type of IOL you will need.
What to Expect
Laser-assisted cataract surgery uses laser precision instead of handheld blades and instruments. It is critical for making accurate incisions and softening the cataract. This precision guides gentle lens removal, optimal placement of your replacement lens (IOL) and accurate astigmatism correction. This precision, along with your surgeon’s expertise combine to provide your best possible vision after cataract surgery.
Follow-Up
We recommend that patients go home and take a nap to let their eyes rest. Most patients will notice improvement in their vision in a few days after their procedure. Vision fluctuations, eye redness, and blurred vision, are normal and may take up to several weeks to dissipate. You will have a series of follow-up appointments so that we can monitor your progress.

"I am so please that I was recommended to this office as well to Dr. Allison Young. The office and the personal are professional and cheerful. I have Sjögren’s Syndrome which drys everything in your body. I honestly though I was going blind and I was seeing another ophthalmologist in a huge chain operation and it seems like I was going in every three months. I honestly couldn’t see. Dr Young saw me on the first visit and explained that I had a very large cataract in my right eye and it needed to be removed. I was extremely petrified but Dr. Young has the type of additive you want every Doctor to have. It was such an easy operation for me, Dr. Young said that it was so big it took her awhile to get it out. The difference was amazing I see amazing I was so amazed how little I was seeing before. So excited to get the other eye done. The after care was just as through as the pre-op. I recommend this Ophthalmology Center and Dr. Young."
