Young, healthy-appearing skin contains an abundance of a substance called hyaluronic acid (HA). As we age, the amount of HA in your skin decreases. This loss of volume causes your skin to lose structure, resulting in folds and sagging wrinkles. These changes are seen most often around your eyes, mouth and nose. Juvederm® is an FDA-approved dermal filler that replaces the HA your skin has lost, thereby improving your skin’s volume and smoothing those unwanted wrinkles and folds. Because HA filler are biocompatible, allergy skin testing is not necessary. Juvederm® is also the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler with demonstrated safety and efficacy in persons of color.

Before the procedure

Because Juvederm® is injected into the superficial and deeper layers of your skin, we ask that you avoid any medications that may cause prolonged bleeding at least one week before the procedure. These include but are not limited to: aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS), such as Ibuprofen, Aleve, Advil and Excedrin. Avoiding these medications will reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site. Before the procedure, Dr. Young will evaluate the soft tissue of your face, assessing the depth of the wrinkles and folds, in order to create the best plan for your treatment. She will take “before” pictures as well to document your response to treatment.

Juvederm® injection procedure

Local anesthetic cream will be placed on your skin about 10 minutes before the procedure to increase your comfort during the procedure. Dr. Young will then gently ease the Juvederm® under your skin in the areas of the wrinkles and folds. The amount of Juvederm® necessary for treatment varies with each patient.

Recovery time

Like BOTOX® there is minimal recovery time after Juvederm injections. It is important, however, to follow your post-operative instructions, which include avoiding strenuous exercise, consumption of alcoholic beverages or prolonged exposure to sun or heat, for at least 24 hours after your treatment. Most side effects are mild and short-acting (7 days or less). The most common side effects include, but are not limited to, temporary reactions at the injection site such as redness, tenderness, swelling, bruising and itching. If you experience swelling, you can apply an ice pack for a few minutes to the treated areas.

How long will a treatment last?

You will see the results from your Juvederm® treatment immediately. Most patients will only need one treatment to achieve the desired smoothing and improvement in skin volume. However, some patients may require supplemental “touch ups.” The results typically last 9 months to a year, after which time you may choose to have another treatment. Occasionally, Dr. Young will recommend a combination of BOTOX® and Juvederm® to achieve optimal results.
